MeriRoad Technology in the Alps – Road Maintenance at Nearly 3,000 Metres Altitude

A demanding road maintenance project was carried out in the Swiss Alps at an altitude of nearly 3,000 metres, where MeriRoad equipment demonstrated its performance in extreme conditions. The approximately 9-kilometre-long road section runs through narrow and challenging mountain terrain, where maintenance solutions must be carefully selected.

In mountainous environments, one of the biggest challenges is logistics. Transporting new aggregate to high and difficult-to-access locations is often extremely expensive—and in many cases practically impossible. For this reason, on-site material recycling becomes a key factor in successful road maintenance.

Recycling enables efficient maintenance without transport

In this project, the MeriRoad method was used, allowing the road to be rehabilitated using only existing materials. The process is based on three key stages: milling, profiling, and compaction.

The road was opened and the existing material was crushed through milling, after which it was reshaped into the correct profile. Finally, the structure was compacted, resulting in a stable and even road surface without the need to bring in new materials.

This approach significantly reduces transport requirements, speeds up the work process, and lowers overall costs—while keeping environmental impact to a minimum.

MeriRoad – a reliable solution for demanding mountain conditions

High altitude, changing weather conditions, and narrow road networks place specific demands on maintenance equipment. Tractor-mounted MeriRoad machines are ideally suited for such environments, where the use of heavy equipment and continuous material transport is not a realistic option.

MeriRoad technology enables durable and cost-effective road maintenance even in the most challenging conditions. The result is a safe, smooth, and long-lasting road that serves traffic reliably high in the mountains.
